TWD: Banana Cream Pie

Banana Cream Pie

When I first picked up my copy of Baking, this was the recipe that drew me in. This was the one I knew I just had to make. Banana Cream Pie is one of my favorites if not the number one on pies I can't stop eating. I wanted to choose it when it was my turn, and at the time, I was probably going to be picking about now. Because of people leaving the group, my time to pick was bumped up to December of 2008. Ugh...not exactly the time when people would want another big dessert added to their undoubtably big load. So I went with the Buttery Jam Cookies instead. Now don't get me wrong, I loved those easy cookies. But my heart was still wanting to make this pie.

I am so grateful that Amy of Sing for Your Supper chose it for Tuesdays with Dorie this week. I haven't had an occasion to make it yet and this was the perfect opportunity.

Packing up the apartment

Because I am the middle of packing up my apartment to move to my much larger soon to be new house, I had to downsize the pie. It actually gave me a chance to break out my mini deep dish pie plates I was given last year. They are the perfect size for a single gal to be able to feel a little less guilty about eating pie.

I must admit, I did cheat a little bit. I didn't make the pie crust. Gasp! I know. Its horrible but I used some premade pie crust I had in the freezer. It was either use it now or probably end up moving it over. And the less frozen food I have to move over the better. It wasn't the greatest pie crust but I really didn't care. The star of the pie was the filling. I usually end up not eating the crust anyway.

Banana Cream Pie

OMG. This was sooooooo good! I loved, loved, loved it! The pastry cream was a little different than a normal banana cream pie. It is made with brown sugar as well as a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg. After tasting it, this pie would definitely fit in with a holiday table. But it was equally as delicious on a hot April (soon to be chilly...sigh...Texas weather) night. The whipped cream was also a little different with the addition of sour cream. I wasn't sure if I would like it but it was very tasty. The tang of the sour cream went really well with the sweet pastry cream and the bananas. A perfect combination!

Once again, a TWD recipe is going on my to make again list. I absolutely loved it! This time, I don't think there is anything I would change. Well, except with a better pie crust or eliminating the pie crust all together. This would make an excellent parfait. In fact...I think I might go make one right now. I have a little of everything left in the fridge!

Nothing like a move to get rid of things and lose things. Don't lose your book cause you will need it again very soon. Great job on the pie. Good luck with the move.
